Students will be able to summarize the experiences of the second wave of Vietnamese refugees (boat people) and identify major plot elements in the digital story, “The Boat” by Nam Lê and Matt Huynh by answering text dependent questions and completing a plot elements diagram.
Students will learn about the societal and cultural factors that shape people’s lives and make them who they are. Drawing on the experiences of Hmong girls, students will be able to critique and evaluate the ways inequities are upheld by society and cultural norms and make connections to their own lives.

Students will complete a flow map that outlines the process of Hmong becoming refugees, and their experiences towards becoming American citizens.
Students will learn about various LGBTQ+ Hmong American experiences, intersectionalities of their identities, and legislation against LGBTQ+ communities in the United States by analyzing various resources and creating a video reflection.
In this lesson, students will take what they have learned about biographies and about the life of General Vang Pao to write a biography of their own on a historical figure/influential person of their choice.
Students will explore traditional Hmong musical instruments and learn about the purpose of each instrument and the instrument’s relationship to Hmong histories and communities.
Students will gain an understanding of how artists can build community awareness of Cambodian American culture through public art including the Cambodia Town Mural Project. Students will also learn how artists use community engagement to highlight experiences of others.
By engaging with various cultural products such as literature, artwork, performance, fashion, and media. Students will use cultural products to create memories and to heal the injustices of the past.
Students will interact and critically analyze poetry by Cambodian American poets to connect universal thematic ideas of human experience/human condition, specifically to Cambodian diaspora.
Students will read and/or listen to testimonies from survivors of the Cambodian Genocide to better understand the human aspect of the events, including but not limited to the atrocities they faced and survived.
Students will listen to music as sociopolitical testimonies to analyze genocide—not only as physical violence, but also structural and cultural violence on a whole community.
Students will learn why people seek refuge, understand what refugee camps are like and where they were for Cambodian refugees after 1975, grasp how resettlement impacts refugees and their places of refuge, and differentiate between asylum seekers and refugees.
Students will analyze the experiences of Cambodian refugees in Southern California. Through this lens, students will research and learn about the immigrant experience of those in their own community.
Students will have a deeper understanding of the historical events of the Cambodian–Vietnamese War and determine the impact of the war on the citizens of Cambodia.
Students will summarize the cause and effects of Vietnamese refugee migration on both the Vietnamese and local US communities at Camp Pendleton by analyzing primary sources and completing a Visual Primary Source Analysis Tool.
Students will be able to recognize, understand, and discuss the negative consequences of military decisions in other countries.
